Pan Am Historic District
Designated by the National Park Service for listing in the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 2025, the Pan Am Historic District at Miami International Airport is comprised of a collection of surviving Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) buildings that played a formative, pivotal role in shaping international air travel, diplomacy and Miami’s emergence as a global city. Preservation leaders say the district represents one of the most significant surviving aviation landscapes in the United States. The images below provide a composite overview of the district.

- PAN AM HANGAR 5 (1929). The 97-year-old hangar is the only still extant structure from Pan Am’s original 36th Street Airport. It is the oldest building at today’s MIA and the oldest known Pan Am building.
- PAN AM DOUBLE HANGAR AND OFFICES (1943). Upon completion, the huge new double hangar and office building was immediately put into service as a maintenance and overhaul base for Pan Am’s WWII Army Air Transport Command operations.
- (TOP) PAN AM LATIN AMERICAN DIVISION HEADQUARTERS AND STEWARDESS COLLEGE (1964). Paying architectural tribute to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India (which earned it the popular nickname “The Taj Mahal”), the building reflects Pan Am’s global reach in the Jet Age. Today, it is being respectfully and meticulously renovated and repurposed as a private VIP terminal, slated to open later in 2026.
- (BOTTOM) PAN AM’S JET MAINTENANCE AND OVERHAUL FACILITY (1964). At the time of its completion, the “Seven Acres under One Roof” facility was the most technologically advanced jet overhaul facility in the world, serving Pan Am’s entire fleet.
- PAN AM INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT ACADEMY (1980). A premier flight training academy that served Pan Am and other airlines, it is still a prestigious international flight academy today. Its stunning atrium lobby contains historic Pan Am photos and artifacts.
